Today as a part of our Behind the Seams with A.K. Rikk's series, we would like to introduce you to Meg Esterkin, our new personal shopper. She’s part of our team of expert stylists that are ready to assist clients and develop their personal style through curated outfits, education and choices that correspond with their lifestyle and fashion goals.
What initially drew you to A.K. Rikk's?
The moment I walked in, I was transported to a more beautiful world. The store itself is so inspiring and filled with amazing fashion. A.K. Rikk’s has a distinct point of view that's unique and intentional. It is such a treasure for West Michigan.
What is your favorite part of working at A.K. Rikk's so far?
The incredible team! Across every department, I’ve been blown away by the talent, creativity and kindness of everyone and of course, the gorgeous products–especially the jewelry and shoes (my fashion weaknesses).
What is your favorite brand at A.K. Rikk’s?
I’m obsessed with Valentino shoes and bags. Getting to work with them is a dream. On the women’s side it’s Toteme, JW Anderson and Veronica Beard. On the men’s side it’s NN07, Thom Browne and ZEGNA.
Did you go to school for fashion/hold a degree or did you just come by it naturally?
Since I was a kid, I was always into sewing, fashion and costuming. I went to school studying Theatre and did my work-study jobs in the costume shop. I also worked for a few years at a costuming company in Chicago while working as a professional production stage manager in the theatre. I fell into the luxury world by way of the diamond trade (more on that later).
What is the first thing you notice about a person?
Their accessories: jewelry, shoes and bags. I love how much of someone’s personality is expressed in the details of their styling.
What’s your go-to pump-up song?
“Balance” by Future Islands or any Queen song.
When you're not at work, what could we find you doing?
I have a busy home life taking care of our cats, dogs and small scaly creatures. Most nights I can be found cooking up new recipes in the kitchen. On days off, I spend as much time as I can outdoors biking or hiking. Whenever I can, I take a weekend vacation camping and kayaking.
Do you have any pets? If so, tell us about them.
My husband and I are passionate about rescuing and fostering animals. Our permanent residents are 4 small dogs, 4 cats and a few lizards and frogs. They are our weird furry and scaly little family.
Did I hear you have a background in jewelry sales? How long were you in the jewelry business and what do you love about jewelry?
I fell completely in love with diamonds and jewelry when I started working at Brilliant Earth in LA back in 2015. There is absolute magic in diamonds and gemstones. I’ve had the privilege to work primarily in custom bridal jewelry and being part of such an important purchase in a couple’s life has been very fulfilling. I’ve also worked with a ton of antique and estate jewelry. The beauty and history that can live on for generations in precious jewels is so special.
I’ve also worked at VRAI by Diamond Foundry & local Grand Rapids jeweler, Bauble Patch. I obtained my Accredited Jewelry Professional certification from the Gemological Institute of America in 2021. I’m your go-to jewelry friend.
What is your power color?
My power color is rich, emerald green. It’s calming and always makes me feel my best.
What fashion/style questions keep you up at night?
Why is everyone obsessed with clipping Labubus on their designer bags? They aren’t even cute.
What’s your favorite junk food?
Currently, it’s these healthy gummy worms called Rotten that I found on Instagram. I may or may not have a monthly subscription.
What superhuman power would you choose?
Teleportation, hands down. If I could magically appear myself all around the world without a 14-hour flight, truly the dream.
Who would you choose to play the main characters in a movie of your life?
The celebrity I've been told I look like is Kirsten Dunst, plus she’s phenomenal.
If you could lose yourself for one day, where would you go and what would you do?
I would teleport back to Japan and shop in Tokyo all day. I went for a few weeks in 2018 and next time I’m only bringing empty suitcases.
If you were able to relive a day in your life, which day would that be and why?
I was lucky enough to travel to Colombia in 2020 and flew back just a few days before the Covid lockdown. I got to go paragliding one day, flying in the mountains while my guide blasted Beyonce on a speaker attached to us. Best day ever.
What’s a fact about you that nobody would guess?
I never owned a car as an adult until I moved back to Michigan in 2019. I was a hardcore city biker, even in winter!
What is your most used emoji?
The sparkle emoji. ✨
