That's One Way to Look Expensive

A pigment so rich that it sort of takes on a life of its own, lives in your imagination and becomes a literal feeling, burgundy is the shade that tugs at your heartstrings and keeps on tugging with an insurmountable force.

Rich and indulgent, deep and moody, crimson-adjacent and with a much more sultry and insouciant personality than red–burgundy is the jewel tone that has us chasing it in the form of wine, berries, fabrics and cosmetics.

As a decadent gemstone hue it’s inherently wealthy and doesn’t feel common. When you see it on the street, it stares back at you. It bites.

This shade gets its name from the rich, red-brown color of wine from the Burgundy region of central France so it’s naturally associated with a worldliness, luxury and a pervading elegance. If you’re up for the challenge, we offer a few ways to wear burgundy and feel its power.

Start From the Top

Get your burgundy fix with Eterne’s cashmere sweater that’s prim, polished and an easy way to drop the colorway into your wardrobe rotation. The same goes for this unfussy cashmere v-neck top from Veronica Beard. It’s a solid-colored anchor piece you can wear alone or layer into oblivion–because burgundy plays nice with others. Not convinced you’re ready to dive so deep into burgundy’s turbulent waters? That’s fair. Try it out in small doses with this twinset from L’agence. The textural eyelash yarns and vintage-inspired buttons on both the cardigan and tank tones down the powerful hue and allows burgundy to share the spotlight (if you can believe it). Pssst! You can wear this cardigan as a top alone and don’t need the tank if you’re wondering...

Demand Attention, Then Keep It

Inviting, like a roaring fire, burgundy tends to warm things up. Tell sad beige to go packing and zest up workwear with Theory’s super unstuffy drawstring pants. The easy pull-on design says comfort while the burgundy shade screams don’t mess with me (but do consider me for that raise). Move over color pop, we’re talking color dynamite as L’agence’s lambskin leather pants are the bottoms that are going to launch a thousand looks. The luxe material is the right playground for this hue to shine–literally.

A Wealth of Versatility

Burgundy is a stained tone. It's a saturated tint that runs deep. It’s a can’t-miss moment in terms of energy and that’s on brand for a PatBO design. This gown is giving goddess and has interesting details at the neckline and hem so the color doesn’t do all the work. The Amanda Uprichard mini dress is more classic, tailored, reined in and ready for polite chitchat at a networking event. An office-appropriate version is found in Theory’s sleeveless option in a wrinkle-resistant material that can accommodate a blazer, briefcase and heels (as well as one more round of edits on that proposal).

The Big Cover Up

Both intense and riveting (sort of like your last love affair), burgundy never sells itself short. This Max Mara coat is 100% leading lady in a femme fatale spy movie. The oversized fit and teddy bear coziness is going to keep you identifiable in a wintry landscape. Burgundy and velvet–it’s unavoidable and like twin flames they live in harmony and exist to drop jaws. L’agence harnesses that feeling with this sexy cropped blazer with decorative buttons.

Down to Your Toes

Burgundy is the hero in a lot of fashion stories. If you love the trend but don’t want to drown in it, small touches make a big impact and Khaite’s glossy pump takes burgundy and tones it down into a minimalist design that’s approachable. Here’s where Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz went wrong–burgundy instead of ruby red (plus, sneakers would have been way more comfortable). Golden Goose’s velvet sneakers once again show the collaboration of burgundy and the right fabric to elicit a passionate response. Velvet is a material that’s alive with shine and depth–moving under our eyes. This sneaker bottles up both a retro feel and a thrilling design that has us nonstop checking the floor.
