The Art of Sale

The Art of Sale

An easy way to romanticize your life is to play the artist. When we are discerning, watchful and open our hearts, we mine the gold and the muse appears. We’re taking the same approach to shopping our sale as we lay a trained eye on and scour the beautiful pieces our buyers have flown around the world to procure.

Taste, value and investment are currents that move through our sale collection so it’s worth a quick tutorial to know what to look for and how to best shop lost treasure during these discounted moments. Consider yourself a collector, chase beauty. You seek the sweet spot where alignment, intention and an artful vision come to fruition, resulting in something that feels at pace and exactly in place with how you dress and how you walk through the world.

Let’s walk through how to curate a thoughtful, artist collection through the eye of a tastemaker.

Shop All Sale

Morning Inspiration

That’s our way of saying shop early. We buy in small quantities for precious deliverables. In sale mode this means that sizes can be limited and they move fast. Even certain colorways and of-the-moment hues are fanciful and fleeting. Pieces are truly uncommonly unique and when discounted, they become an irreplaceable pleasure, beyond price. Remember, there are many hunters in this game too so grabbing your measurements beforehand can cut down on any hesitations.

“Try and do a closet clean out before sale. Also, when you find an item, imagine how to wear it in at least three different ways for it to be a yes.” - Gabi, Personal Stylist

Don't Believe The Hanger

To fully appreciate the art you want to acquire it must not only resonate with you but fit precisely–and the hanger can’t be trusted. Some items never reach their full potential until married to the body. Consider that sizing might be off or cut for a season’s beloved, oversized fit. By trying everything on you get the full picture. Consider exploring different sizes as well. Perhaps the reason an item went to sale was that it wasn't fitting quite right so sizing up or down can be the difference on a score you never saw coming. Remember, artists look beyond what everyone else sees.

“Always work with a stylist. They have insider info that you don’t. Ask them about their favorite piece that went to sale. They know all the gems that slipped through the cracks.” -Bethany, Personal Stylist

Gender Bender

You can switch teams for a bit. Women are encouraged to find joy even if it happens to be in the men’s section. Oversized boyfriend cardigans and sweatshirts are fun pieces to experiment with for that borrowed from the boys look. Guys, flowy wide-leg pants, boxy shirts or certain coats and jackets can work for slim builds. Accessories such as scarves, sunglasses and jewelry can often be unisex so that’s a playground to explore. Art is art–no matter what side of the store it’s on. Self-expression is a wild, rebellious urge and it thinks the rules are a drag. Remember, removing the frame from an artwork can shift the perspective.

“Comb every corner of sale. Make a second pass and be adventurous–maybe try a piece you wouldn't buy at full price.” -Ben, Director of Sales & Mens

They're Classics For a Reason

It’s no secret certain fabrics, silhouettes and designers tend to age better than others. Identifying a forever piece means leaning into these categories. When it comes to fabrics, get handsy and feel items for their softness and wearability. Source cashmere, silk, wool, leather, suede and linen. Favored double-breasted sportcoats for men or figure-flattering A-line dresses for women or where you stay the course and buy the best of the best. Do your research on designers with staying power. From Ralph Lauren, ZEGNA and John Lobb to Valentino Garavani and Chloé, some fashion houses have been around for decades (follow their lead). Cashmere sweaters and iconic denim fits are always safe spaces to shop–never fading from the scene. Like any investment piece, it’s worth saving up to secure special pieces.

“Sales are a great time to focus on core closet staples. We always feel pressured by sales but don’t just buy trends. It’s good to come in with a clear idea of where you can add value and add pieces that last a long time." -Brie, Personal Stylist

Off Season

Stay in artist mode. It’s hard to sift through breezy linen resortwear and barely-there garments made for summer’s carefree romance when it’s -5 degrees outside and the sun is a distant friend. Smart shopping requires you to amp up the imagination. Off-season items can get lost but stay empowered, not overwhelmed. Think about upcoming warm-weather travels. Take stock of your closet for what you’re missing so those denim shorts are on your radar. The artist’s mindset is seasonless. Think palettes and pleasures.

“Get here the first day or it’s not going to be here. Start early.” -Chase, Personal Stylist

Whimsy is Everything

Sale can reveal the eccentrics–the pieces that are too much for the general population. Statement pieces whether playful, errotic, inventive or risky can infuse your wardrobe with personality. Step into the artist’s studio and see how to bring to life the alligator shoes, faux fur hat and loudly printed skirt. A wise woman once said "Is somebody gonna match my freak?" and that’s how we feel about certain, less-discovered pieces just waiting for their muse.

“Re-evaluate your wardrobe and get rid of old things and get some new diamonds at great prices.” -Blair, Women's Buyer & Personal Stylist
