The 5 Jackets You Need Now

Your Jacket Says More About You Than Your Watch

When it comes to the 5 jackets every man should own this season, we’ve gathered a few of our favorite archetypes that are absolute crowd pleasers. These pieces are always popping up year after year in new silhouettes, updated fabrics and with the season’s latest bells and whistles but the message is the same: tried and true is a lasting fascination. From function, fit and heritage value, any of the following jackets are the personality hires of your closet.

The Bomber Jacket

A style we’ve seen for ages, the man that wears a bomber jacket gives off a little living legend sensibility. It’s a silhouette rooted in toughness–originating in the early 20th century for the military and designed to keep pilots warm in drafty cockpits. From elevated suede versions to more everyday options, the bomber walks into a room and owns it. There’s no mistaking who you’re dealing with. Thom Browne takes the classic route and lands on this deerskin leather option that’s spilling over with nostalgia. It’s both collegiate and sporty in a rich contrast of burgundy and cream that’s ideal for fall fits. From date night to the city’s latest art gallery showing, this spiffy piece adds depth to your look. If you’re craving something more streamlined and technical, Theory’s unfussy take on it provides the same handsome statement but in a wrinkle-resistant fabric that’s quick drying and designed to deliver maximum airflow. It’s a more subtle option for the man who's running through airports and experiencing fickle weather.

Why it matters:This is a silhouette that sets you apart from the others. Bomber guys inherently snub their nose at pedestrian fashions.

The Chore Coat

Look like you’re deep in the dress code with the dapper gentleman of the bunch, the chore coat. Dating back to 19-Century France, this style was worn by the working class and stays close to our hearts thanks to its practicality, durability and humble roots. These days, hybrid pieces deliver major versatility and can be worn as smart-casual wear so your morning coffee and commute look is both functional and endearing. It harnesses the courage to get up day after day and toil but also works in all the pockets you could ever imagine so your phone, cash, smokes and flask have a home. Zegna’s dark navy version in the brand’s Oasi cashmere is a masterclass in refined fabrics that are appropriate at work and can even follow you beyond to drinks at the local pub. That’s the everyman vibe this piece carries with it. An undeniable outfit-builder, Maurizio Baldassari’s plaid chore coat brings print and palettes into play for autumnal adaptability.

Why it matters: It’s the kind of outerwear that can run in many circles. A chameleon that morphs to the mood.

The Trucker Jacket

Again, workers and laborers have to look fly. Miners and cowboys embraced this battle tested piece. Levi Strauss introduced the first denim jacket and it has shifted and evolved into part of the rebel starter kit. The utilitarian roots mean that you can riff off a workwear aesthetic even though you’re just moonlighting at the local brewery. Call it boy next door armor but Rag & Bone’s trucker jacket is a zip-up option in denim that dares you to break it in (part of the fun). There’s a special wash with earthy undertones because coloration is a big draw in terms of denim varieties. With everyone under the sun having a trucker jacket on the racks, it’s important to fine-tune your repertoire with top-shelf selections. Enter the espresso lamb leather piece by Savas. It’s limited edition and handmade and that alone got a few guys triggered.

Why it matters:We can agree that this timeless go-to never fades from the fashion scene. Own one or two–heck, four is actually standard in our opinion.

The Technical Jacket

Sporty or we don’t want it. This activewear option is born out of the need to run errands but also look like you still care enough to look your best. Athluxry is a state of mind where you can lean into technical fabrics and sport sensibilities but in a classy way. Goodbye ragged fleeces and flimsy track jackets. On the horizon are jackets that offer sleek sophistication. When life gets casual, ease into something your family would be proud to see you in. It’s a prodigal-son-comes-home moment and he’s wearing something nicer. Moncler reminds everyone that a lightweight jacket with simple detailing is a win for post-workout moments or school pick up where you’re wrangling children and backpacks. Greyson’s selection is the final word on grab-and-go layers in technical blends that are windproof with 4-way stretch for those coming from or on their way to a little tee time.

Why it matters: One word: ease. This aesthetic has a sense of action, motion, accomplishment and vigor. It begs the question, did you go to the gym today? Maybe…

The Waxed Field Jacket

Shut everyone up with one look and this jacket. Waxed field jackets are emblematic of British and Irish country life and come in a longer length. This was the gear for hunting, shooting and fishing pursuits back in the day. The wax coating makes this style water-resistant but also bulkier and heavier (but some like that vibe). The tone is tough. There’s a rugged masculinity involved. It’s a go-hard style that’s never afraid. You might consider it an escapist piece. It says: I know who I am and you should too. The quintessential example comes from Belstaff, a brand synonymous with waxed options, famous for pioneering the use of waxed cotton for motorcycling apparel. Their dark navy Fieldmaster jacket is a tough as nails option that’s also wind-repellant. The plaid interior is a nice touch on this garment that’s made for the open road (add a motorcycle as an accessory if it’s in the budget). These jackets lend an edge and are a heritage piece that you could pass down to your offspring (if they have the guts to rock it).

Why it matters: It’s the badass of the bunch. Full stop. You get your man card with every purchase.
