How to Layer Your Look For Fall

Have you heard of Aimee Song? She is a fashion and interior design Blogger / YouTuber featuring photos and videos focused on fashion and design inspiration. She is a New York Times best selling author of "Capture Your Style: Transform Your Instagram Photos, Showcase Your Life, and Build the Ultimate Platform," and her book "Aimee Song: World of Style" was just released! She is a sartorial star and one of Instagram's hottest "IT GIRLS" with over 5 million followers. We LOVE her style and are inspired by the way she pushes boundaries with layering her looks. Fall is all about layers. By adding an extra layer to an outfit, you can go from a "basic" look to something amazing and seemingly pulled together. Additionally, with unpredictable weather, especially in our home in the Midwest, layers are a must to go from a chilly 40-degree morning to 60-degree lunch date.

First, start with a basic, lightweight top. This can be a short sleeve t-shirt, long-sleeve t-shirt, or light-weight turtleneck. Generally, something solid or neutral is a good choice. Our go-to recommendation is this Rag & Bone black turtleneck. It will layer with almost everything.

Next, add another layer such as a soft cardigan or sweater. This will add intrigue, depth, and warmth to your look. This Helmut Lang cardigan is a textural dream made with knit brushed wool and alpaca-blend in beautiful ivory. It's a staple you need for layering!

You can then add a jacket or coat. If you're feeling extra adventurous, consider layering a coat over a coat! Can you imagine how amazing this brown suede coat from The Row would look paired with this Harris Wharf London wool coat?

Finally, add accessories like a scarf, bag, bracelet, boots, etc. One of our personal favorites is this scarf from Valentino. Aimee is a huge fan of Chloé, so you can get her look by adding a Chloe bag from A.K. Rikk's!

When in doubt with layering, consider a monochromatic look with all shades in the same color family, but varying textures. This is a surefire way to look chic and effortless. Contrary to what you might think, layers won't make you look bulky! Instead, they can help you draw attention to where YOU want people to look. According to Lauren Conrad, "A perfectly layered look will compliment your curves and create the illusion of a more proportional silhouette". Keep the under-layers more fitted to keep your shape slim. If you’re concerned about your waistline, try to top off your look with something belted.
