Behind the Seams with A.K. Rikk's: Meet Kelley Hughes

Today as a part of our Behind the Seams with A.K. Rikk’s series we would like to introduce you to our Events Coordinator, Kelley Hughes. The A.K. Rikk’s family has been lucky to have Kelley since early October! “I was instantly drawn to the warmth, personality, and style of each person at A.K. Rikk’s” We asked Kelley how she found A.K. Rikk’s and what makes her tick during her interview!

What was your life before A.K. Rikk's?

Before I worked for A.K. Rikk's, I grew up in Metro Detroit. My first experience in West Michigan was when I moved for college. I got my bachelor's degree in Marketing & Business Administration from Grand Valley State University (GVSU). I earned my master's degree (also from GVSU) in Higher Education, College Student Affairs Leadership. After my studies, I started my own business selling modern-vintage home decor and accessories. I slowly started offering design services for commercial and residential clients. Eventually, I closed the physical retail space and focused primarily on my client work while still keeping my foot in the door of Higher Education as the Marketing Coordinator for Housing & Residence Life at GVSU.

How did you find A.K. Rikk's?

I had always admired A.K. Rikk's from afar (videos and photos on Instagram, news outlets, etc. with the new building). Then, I kept running into more and more people in the community and through my shop who worked for A.K. Rikk's. I was instantly drawn to the warmth, personality, and style of each person. After I met Jim Murray, I knew the team and overall vision was something I wanted to be a part of.

What was your first memory when you started at A.K. Rikk's?

My first memory was being invited (three days before my official start date) to join the team in Traverse City for their staff 30th Anniversary trip. What a privilege and experience! I was able to meet my new work family in a much more laid back setting. So thankful they welcomed me in so graciously. I also joined in on the 30th Anniversary festivities at the shop the couple of weeks before- man! What a perfect event to show A.K. Rikk's heart and personality!

What is your favorite part of working at A.K. Rikk's?

My favorite part of working here is definitely the people! Everyone works so hard each and every day, but they don't forget to have fun. Efficiency and excellence are important to me, and the A.K. Rikk's staff are so dedicated to maximizing their talents in their roles. I finally found my "people"! I also love our building- what a beautiful and inspiring place to come to work each day.

What has been your favorite moment since starting?

My favorite moment since starting at A.K. Rikk's was working the After Thanksgiving Sale shopping event. Energy was high with both our staff and clients, and we were all in the holiday spirit! I've never seen such teamwork. We also kicked off our Toys For Tot's collection that day, and I was so inspired by the generosity of our clients.

When you're not at work, what are you usually doing?

When I am not at work, I am usually spending time with my dog, Harper. I am definitely "that" dog mom. I also still take on a hand full of design clients and collaborate with local talent for photo shoots, events, etc. If I have time to get out of the city, I like to see my family or travel anywhere- especially with my brother and best friend, Landon.

That concludes this Behind the Seams with A.K. Rikk’s interview. Next time you stop in, be sure to say “hello” to Kelley!
