Today as apart of Behind The Seams with A.K. Rikk's series we’d like to introduce our Director of Operations and Ambassador of Wellness, Billy Lanford! He has been apart of our family for two years and without a doubt believes everyone is in control of their own success if they're dedicated to continual progress toward becoming their best. One of Billy’s favorite quotes that shares insight to his thought process is from Author and Life Coach, Tony Robbins - “If you want to take the island, then burn your boats. With absolute commitment come the insights that create real victory.” Billy is a phenomenal team leader, mentor, motivator and an important influence on the A.K. RIKK'S work culture. Get to know Billy’s perspective on personal development, company culture, and where his inspiration comes from though a series of questions in our third Behind The Seams with A.K. Rikk's interview.
Would you say being a athlete has attributed to your continual drive to always better yourself or others?
Growing up I always played sports against kids who were older than me by a year or two. Since I was not the biggest kid on the block, I always had to work harder, be physically and mentally fit, to have a way to be able to compete. I always knew if I wanted to even the playing field I had to be willing to do more than the other kids. That mentality from such a young age spilled over into many aspects in my life. I desire to push myself to be all that I was created to be. My mindset toward life and the effect it has had on me has caused me to want to share this way to embrace life - a life they are proud of. Everyone has ‘something’ they want to be better at; whether it is working out, eating healthier, reading more, or even just having time to sit quietly. If at the end of each day I was complacent about my life, I feel my influence would decrease or go away… that is not what I’m after in life. I put the actions in place for the outcomes that I want, then I grind. It’s all about the process!
How would you describe A.K. Rikk's company culture?
I would describe our culture as integral. It ALL starts with the people! We have an amazing staff who are willing to grow and challenge themselves even when it is difficult to do so. We eat together, celebrate together, and give to one another when it’s needed. It’s truly special. We have eight core values. For example, ‘Family Like Atmosphere’ and ‘Embrace and Drive Change’ guide us in how we cultivate who we are. We also work very hard at being and becoming a place where we can give and receive open and honest feedback - we want everything we do to lead to growth as people and as a company.
Why is an Ambassador of Wellness such a key component in work culture?
A.K. Rikk's continued to grow year after year and eventually moved to this new location Jim had a vision to bring someone onto the team to mentor the staff so they could better serve the client. Our clients deserve our best work therefore we have to be our personal best. We live in a world where company culture is not always at the forefront of importance because focus is on measurable business, which without a doubt is very important, but without growing the employees, the business never truly comes to life. We want to grow as a company and we believe the best way to do that is to give our staff the opportunity to become their best self, which is where my role as Ambassador of Wellness comes into play. As Jim Rohn says “Success leaves clues” and because of this, I know there’s a formula to get people to where they need to go in life. The best way I can sum up what I do is - I meet people where they are in their life and challenge them based on a process while holding them accountable.
Where do you find inspiration for continuing personal and business development?
Oh my gosh, I first find it here! The clients of A.K. Rikk's are so unbelievably inspiring because of their stories - whether about their life or the interesting things they're experiencing. It's so easy to embrace their energy and sneak in a question or two here and there. Outside of A.K. Rikk’s I devour books, podcasts, as well as well as push myself physically - often by training with our staff at MVP. Some of my favorite podcasts are Tim Ferriss, Lewis Howes, Jocko Wilink, and Rich Roll. Having a mentor or mentors is very important to me. I believe when you are able to download a podcast, read a book, or a blog, that knowledge gives you a perspective that you wouldn't have had before listening or reading. Every time I hear something new, get a new perspective, or challenged to look at something in a different way - I am forever changed. I will always continue to grow in my life and that is a choice.
