Today as a part of our Behind the Seams with A.K. Rikk's series we would like to introduce you to one of our E-Commerce Stylists, Tyler Smith. Tyler has been an important part of the A.K. Rikk's family since November! "What is interesting is that I don't love the clothes for reasons one would normally think. To me, the love is stemmed from the different challenges each piece presents to me when I am styling every garment." We asked Tyler what he would have with him if he was stranded on a deserted island and what makes him tick during his interview!
Where are you from originally?
I was born in Portage, Michigan, but raised in South Haven. I also spent many weekends up north, on Drummond Island and in Sault Saint Marie, where my dad lived. Before living in Holland and working at A.K. Rikk’s, I came from Los Angeles, where I completed my Bachelor of Arts.
What is your favorite part about working at A.K. Rikk's?
Hands down, my coworkers. Every single person employed by A.K. Rikk’s contributes to making an amazing company culture and the best atmosphere to work in. Second to the people, I obviously love the clothes. What is interesting is that I don't love the clothes for reasons one would normally think. To me, the love is stemmed from the different challenges each piece presents to me when I am styling every garment.
What is your favorite brand?
It is difficult for me to choose only one, as I love many pieces from several collections throughout the store. However, one brand that always comes to mind, partly because it has sentiment, is A.P.C. On my first trip to Paris, with my partner Dustin, we discovered the A.P.C. Surplus Store tucked away in the Montmartre, and I fell in love. I bought my first pair of Chelsea boots there.
What can we find you doing when you're not at work?
Outside of work I spend a lot of time in the kitchen. It is therapeutic for me to zone out, and express my creativity in another way outside of styling clothes for photography. From planning, prepping, preparing, plating, serving, and of course eating, I love it all. Recently I spent a Friday night alone cooking a five course vegan meal, and I got so much joy from it! In addition, I have a passion for antiquing and collecting. In the sunny months, I live at the beach or on my parents sailboat.
What would you say is a fun fact about yourself?
Driven by our passion for design and antiques, my partner, twin brother and I planned, designed, and opened a Speakeasy by the name of Ondergrond. It was nine months in the making, and has been one of my greatest accomplishments yet. It makes me excited and passionate about my future as an E-Commerce Stylist.
If you were deserted on an island, what three things would you want to have with you?
Since the beach is one of my happiest places, I am assuming my deserted island would have a beautiful beach. Since that is the case, I wouldn’t need much. If I had to bring three things to bring my happiness to the next level, they would be 1) a large, cozy, beach towel or blanket, 2) the latest issue of Kinfolk, and 3) a bottomless bottle of chilled Rosé! Can I be there now?!
That concludes this Behind the Seams with A.K. Rikk's Interview! Next time you stop in, be sure to say "hello" to Tyler!
